Deep in the Gobi Desert, where the Silk Road once divided into its northern and southern routes, lies a cliff of caves filled with treasure. The Mogao Caves of Dunhuang - a UNESCO World Heritage site - hold more than 700 grottoes decorated with 45,000 square metres of murals and over 2,000 painted sculptures, created continuously from the 4th to the 14th century. Monks, merchants, kings and pilgrims funded these paintings: Buddhas and bodhisattvas, scenes of paradise, donors in silk robes, and above all the 飞天 (fēitiān) - the flying apsaras, celestial musicians who float through the cave ceilings on ribbons of cloud, their scarves streaming like rivers of colour.
Standing before a Dunhuang mural, you can see the whole world that passed along the Silk Road: Indian Buddhist imagery, Persian patterns, Central Asian dancers, Chinese landscape styles - all blended into an art found nowhere else on earth. The pigments were ground from minerals - azurite blue, malachite green, cinnabar red, gold leaf - and some colours, sealed in the desert dark for over a thousand years, still glow as if painted yesterday.
