Itinerary:

Day 1: First Encounter with Fenghuang · Misty Night on the Tuojiang River

Take the high-speed rail shuttle bus to Fenghuang Ancient Town and check into a stilted building homestay upstream of the Tuojiang River. After a short rest, walk to the North Gate Tower and Jumping Rock—the iconic check-in spots of the ancient town. Step on the stone piers to cross the Tuojiang River, feel the gurgling water, and take panoramic photos of the stilted buildings. Wander along the bluestone street outside the North Gate, watch local residents wash clothes and fish, and experience the original local life. Have an authentic Xiangxi-style lunch at an old-established restaurant in the ancient town, tasting blood glutinous rice duck, Miao sour fish soup (non-spicy version available), and bacon stir-fried with bracken (vegetarian options provided). In the afternoon, visit Shen Congwen's Former Residence with Chinese-English bilingual explanations to learn about the creation background of "Border Town" and the life of the literary master. Then walk to Xiong Xiling's Former Residence and Yang Family Ancestral Hall to experience the Ming and Qing architectural style and celebrity culture of western Hunan. Climb the Hongqiao Wind and Rain Tower, the central landmark of the ancient town, and overlook the panoramic view of the Tuojiang River, stilted building groups and Wanming Tower from the viewing platform on the second floor. In the evening, take a walk along the Tuojiang River after dinner to admire the red lanterns on both banks and the reflection of stilted buildings' lights (the best viewing spots are Jumping Rock, Wanming Tower and Snow Bridge). Optionally, relax in a quiet bar, listen to Xiangxi folk songs, and taste local rice wine (non-alcoholic drinks available).
Notes: The ancient town is full of bluestone roads and steps; please wear flat non-slip shoes and avoid high heels. The Jumping Rock on the Tuojiang River is slippery; hold the iron chain and walk slowly, and do not take photos while walking. Xiangxi has frequent rain; please carry an umbrella with you.

Day 2: In-Depth Tour of the Ancient Town · Immersive Intangible Heritage Experience

Spend the whole day exploring the ancient town on foot with a relaxed rhythm and no driving. After breakfast, experience official boating on the Tuojiang River, with boatmen humming folk songs as you drift down the river to enjoy the stilted buildings, Wanming Tower and Duocui Tower on both banks. After getting off the boat, wander along Huilongge Ancient Street and Dongzheng Street, visit handicraft shops, and watch the hand-made process of Miao silver, tie-dye and batik. Have lunch at a local restaurant near Hongqiao, tasting Xiangxi snacks such as rice tofu, shrimp cakes and glutinous rice preserved meat zongzi, then return to the homestay for a nap. In the afternoon, go to an intangible heritage workshop in the ancient town to experience Miao tie-dye or batik. Choose one of Dongba paper/Miao paper making or Miao silver forging. In the evening, taste special meals such as mushroom hot pot and shefan (a traditional Xiangxi glutinous rice dish); after dinner, you can wander around the ancient town night market and buy souvenirs such as ginger candy and Miao embroidery.
Notes: Intangible heritage experiences need to be booked in advance to ensure exclusive experience without waiting. The reference price for Miao costume rental is 20-30 yuan per hour; avoid high-priced soliciting photography on the street.

Day 3: Miao Village Customs · One-Day Tour of Mountains and Waters

Take a regular chartered car to Morong Miao Village, with no transfers or shopping throughout the trip. Upon arrival at the Miao village, experience the welcome ceremony with door-blocking wine and Miao folk songs (non-alcoholic drinks available as a substitute). Visit the ancient Miao village and stilted building groups to learn about Miao architecture, costumes and festival culture. Watch Miao witchcraft performances and Miao song and dance to feel the original folk culture. Have a Miao long-table banquet at noon, tasting Miao special dishes such as sour fish soup, bacon, glutinous rice cakes and wild vegetables (non-spicy and vegetarian options provided). In the afternoon, take a chartered car to Qiliang Cave, known as "gathering all the wonderful scenery in one cave", only 7 kilometers away from the ancient town. Explore the cave wonders including stalactites, stalagmites, underground rivers and waterfalls, with a gentle plank road throughout and low physical effort. In the evening, take a chartered car back to the ancient town and have dinner at a Western restaurant or fusion cuisine restaurant to adapt to international tourists' tastes.
Notes: Miao village etiquette: do not step on the threshold, whistle or hold an umbrella; respect local customs. The temperature in the cave is constant at 16-18℃; please carry a thin coat. The ground is slippery; walk slowly.
