Day 1 - Sun 6 Jun: Beijing Arrival & Great Wall Arrive in Beijing. After settling in, head to the Mutianyu or Badaling section of the Great Wall for your first encounter with China's most iconic monument. Welcome dinner featuring Peking duck, and an evening stroll through the illuminated Houhai lakeside district.
Day 2 - Mon 7 Jun: Forbidden City & High-Speed Rail to Changsha Explore the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven, where emperors once prayed for good harvests. In the late afternoon, take the high-speed train to Changsha, capital of Hunan Province (approx. 5.5 hours). Overnight in Changsha.
Day 3 - Tue 8 Jun: Changsha to Miluo: The Origin of the Festival
Morning visit to Yuelu Academy, one of China's oldest institutions of higher learning, on Yuelu Mountain. Then travel to Miluo - the very river where Qu Yuan drowned himself. Visit the Qu Yuan Memorial Temple and the Qu Yuan Museum, where an English-speaking guide tells the full story of the poet, the legend and how a desperate rescue became a national festival.
Evening: walk along the Miluo Riverbank as festival preparations begin.
Day 4 - Wed 9 Jun: Dragon Boat Festival Day in Miluo The festival's heart. Watch the grand dragon boat races on the Miluo River from a reserved riverside viewing spot, with a guide explaining the teams, drum patterns and traditions. In the afternoon, join a zongzi-making workshop with a local family - fold bamboo leaves, pack glutinous rice, tie the parcels and eat your own creations.

Day 5 - Thu 10 Jun: Miluo to Yueyang: Dongting Lake Races Travel to Yueyang, home of the famous Yueyang Tower and Dongting Lake - one of China's most celebrated dragon boat racing venues. Ascend Yueyang Tower, where countless poets and scholars have gazed across the lake. Afternoon: watch the Dongting Lake races, one of Hunan's most spectacular, with teams in vivid dragon-headed boats slicing across the water.
Day 6 - Fri 11 Jun: Guilin: Karst Landscapes & Li River Cruise Fly or take high-speed rail from Changsha to Guilin (Guangxi). Board a Li River cruise through the karst peaks that have inspired Chinese painters for a thousand years - the landscape printed on the ¥20 banknote. Evening: stroll through the western-street atmosphere of Yangshuo.
Day 7 - Sat 12 Jun: Guilin to Guangzhou: Sachet Making Fly to Guangzhou, the great southern metropolis on the Pearl River.
Afternoon: perfume sachet (xiangnang) sewing workshop - embroider and fill your own fragrant pouch, a Duanwu tradition believed to ward off illness. Evening: explore the lively Shamian Island and Canton Tower waterfront.
Day 8 - Sun 13 Jun: Pearl River International Dragon Boat Races & Departure
Morning: watch the spectacular Pearl River international dragon boat races, where teams from around the world compete in front of thousands of spectators.
Afternoon: free time for souvenir shopping in the old city, then transfer to Guangzhou Baiyun Airport for departure - or extend your journey to Hong Kong (just a short train ride away).
