City: Suzhou
Peach Blossom Woodblock New Year paintings flourished in Suzhou's Peach Blossom Dock area from the Ming to Qing dynasties. Local craftsmen carved detailed patterns on hard wooden blocks, applied ink and pressed paper to create colourful prints. The themes include auspicious flowers, legendary figures, rural life scenes and folk stories. These prints were sold widely in local markets and even exported to neighbouring countries, becoming an important part of Jiangnan folk culture and festival traditions.
In the workshop, the artisan will show original wood blocks and explain carving, ink applying and printing steps. Participants will use preserved traditional wood blocks to make their own New Year painting prints. You can take your finished artwork home as a unique souvenir. The bilingual tutor will share stories about how ancient Suzhou people used woodblock prints for home decoration and festival celebrations.
Adult leisure travellers can enjoy the fun of traditional hand printing and learn about Chinese festival customs. For overseas student groups, this activity supports folk art research. Students can study how woodblock printing recorded ordinary people’s life hundreds of years ago and discuss the spread of print art in ancient East Asia. They can also compare ancient woodblock printing with modern printing technology.
PandaStudyTour provides all wood blocks, ink, paper and protective gloves. We can combine this workshop with other Suzhou intangible heritage activities for your custom study tour.
