The company traces its origins to the "Qu Huanchang Baobao Dan" formula created by Qu Huanchang in 1902; after the secret formula was nationalized in 1955, production was taken over by the Kunming Pharmaceutical Factory. In 1993, the company completed its shareholding restructuring and went public; it changed its name in 1996; completed the split-share reform in 2006; and, following the implementation of mixed-ownership reform from 2016 to 2019, established a structure without a single actual controlling shareholder. In 2025, it acquired Juyao Tang Pharmaceutical for 660 million yuan, and its smart factory was recognized by the World Economic Forum as a "Global Manufacturing Lighthouse". In 2018, the company was named to Forbes' list of the World's Best Employers, and in 2022, it obtained an internet hospital license to build a health management platform. In 2023, it established the "Industrial Hemp Research Center" and obtained a scientific research cultivation license. The company has been ranked among the Top 50 Global Pharmaceutical Companies four times, placing 33rd in 2025, and ranked 280th among China's Top 500 Manufacturing Enterprises in 2019. On January 28, 2026, the company received the "2025 Yunnan Provincial People's Government Quality Award".
