This is the Silk Road in its entirety: the road itself, not a museum version. You begin in Xi'an, where the merchant role play drops you into a Tang dynasty bazaar and the Terracotta Army guards the tomb of the first emperor. Then the high-speed rail carries you west through the Hexi Corridor - Lanzhou on the Yellow River, Zhangye's rainbow Danxia cliffs, Jiayuguan where the Great Wall ends - to Dunhuang, the oasis of the Mogao Caves and singing dunes. From Dunhuang, the route follows the old caravan road through the Xingxingxia (Star Gorge) pass into Xinjiang itself: Hami, the Turpan Depression below sea level, and finally Urumqi on the northern slope of the Tianshan. It is the journey that merchants, monks and envoys took for two thousand years - now on comfortable trains, with expert guides.

Day 1 - Arrival in Xi'an (Chang'an)
Transfer and hotel check-in. Afternoon: bike the Ming dynasty city wall, then dinner in the Muslim Quarter - lamb paomo, roujiamo and skewers that have fuelled Silk Road travellers for a millennium.
Day 2 - The Merchant Role Play + Xi'an's Tang Legacy
Morning at the recreated Tang West Market: choose your merchant identity (Sogdian trader? jade merchant? caravan leader?), learn the rules of Silk Road trade, and haggle with replica coins in the bazaar. Afternoon: the Shaanxi History Museum (Hejiacun gold and silver hoard) and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, built by the monk Xuanzang after his Silk Road pilgrimage.
Day 3 - The Terracotta Army
A full day at the Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum, with an archaeologist guide: the three pits of warriors, the Bronze Chariots hall, and an optional clay warrior-making workshop. Evening: the Grand Tang Mall lights.
Day 4 - Xi'an to Lanzhou: The Yellow River
Morning high-speed rail west to Lanzhou (~2.5 hours). Afternoon: walk the Yellow River at the Iron Bridge, see the Waterwheel Expo Park, and visit the Gansu Provincial Museum for the Silk Road's earliest artefacts. Dinner: Lanzhou beef noodles, the city's signature dish.
Day 5 - Lanzhou to Zhangye: Rainbow Cliffs
Morning rail to Zhangye (~3 hours). Afternoon at the Zhangye Danxia National Geopark — the rainbow-coloured sandstone cliffs that the Silk Road caravans passed without noticing. Sunset over the layered, painted rock.
Day 6 - Zhangye to Jiayuguan: The Western End of the Wall
Morning rail to Jiayuguan (~1 hour). Afternoon at Jiayuguan Fortress - the "First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven", where the Great Wall ends and the desert begins. Join the Great Wall military history workshop: signal drills, fortress life, and the gate through which Silk Road traders once passed.
Day 7 - Jiayuguan to Dunhuang: Caves & Camel Caravan
Morning rail/road to Dunhuang (~2 hours). Afternoon at the Mogao Caves - a thousand years of Buddhist wall painting, a UNESCO treasure. Then the Mingsha ("Singing Sand") Dunes: ride a camel caravan across the golden sand to Crescent Lake, and stay for the desert sunset.
Day 8 - Dunhuang to Hami: Crossing into Xinjiang
Morning at Dunhuang Museum or the old Silk Road town. Then the historic overland drive through the Xingxingxia (Star Gorge) pass - the narrow defile that has marked China's western frontier for two thousand years - into Xinjiang itself (~4.5 hours). Evening arrival in Hami, famous for its sweet melons; dinner with Uyghur naan and lamb skewers.
Day 9 - Hami to Turpan: Below Sea Level
Morning rail to Turpan (~2.5 hours). Afternoon: the Grape Valley, where trellises of seedless grapes shade the Turpan Depression, and a visit to the Flaming Mountains - the red sandstone hills made famous by the Monkey King legend.
Day 10 - Turpan to Urumqi: Ancient Cities & Final Journey
Morning: the Jiaohe Ruins, an entire city carved from loess two thousand years ago, and the karez underground irrigation system that makes Turpan's agriculture possible. Afternoon rail to Urumqi (~1 hour). A final evening at the Grand Bazaar, then transfer to Urumqi Diwopu International Airport for your onward flight.
