Soochow University is a "Double First-Class" institution jointly established by the Ministry of Education and the Jiangsu Provincial Government, as well as a partner institution of the National Space Administration. Its predecessor was Soochow University, founded in 1900. It is one of China's earliest institutions of higher learning to adopt a modern university disciplinary system, and it pioneered graduate education, the study of Anglo-American law, and university journals in China. Following the reorganization of universities and faculties in 1952, the institution resumed the name Soochow University in 1982 and subsequently merged with Soochow College of Sericulture, Soochow Institute of Silk Industry, and Soochow Medical College. The university currently comprises 37 colleges covering 13 major disciplinary categories. It offers 31 first-level doctoral programs and 30 postdoctoral research stations, with disciplines such as chemistry and materials science ranking in the top 1% globally in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI). Upholding the motto "Cultivate the Upright Spirit of Heaven and Earth; Emulate the Perfect Men of Ancient and Modern Times", the university has nurtured outstanding talents including Li Zhengdao, Jin Yong, and more than 50 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. It is hailed as "China's Cambridge of the East".
