Tsinghua University, also known as "Tsinghua", was founded in 1911 as Tsinghua Academy, named after the water, wood, and Tsinghua University. It was a preparatory school for studying in the United States established by the Qing government, with its funding sourced from the partial refund of the Boxer Indemnity by the United States in 1908. In 1912, it was renamed Tsinghua University. In 1928, it was renamed National Tsinghua University. In 1937, the full-scale outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan led to its southward relocation to Changsha, where it formed the National Changsha Temporary University with Peking University and Nankai University. In 1938, it was relocated to Kunming and renamed National Southwest United University. In 1946, it was renamed National Southwest United University
Move back to Tsinghua Garden. In 1949, with the establishment of the People's Republic of China, Tsinghua University entered a new stage of development.
In 1952, the departments of higher education institutions across the country were reorganized into multi-disciplinary industrial universities. In 1978, it became a comprehensive research university.
