Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival in Ulanqab → Wulan Hada Volcano Group | Touch the "Mars Surface"
- Arrive in Ulanqab, check into downtown accommodation to settle in and relax, adapt to the dry grassland climate, and stock up on drinking water and sun protection products.
- In the afternoon, depart for Wulan Hada Volcano Group. Hike close to the complete volcanic landforms, climb to the volcanic crater, overlook the continuous grassland and black lava land, and walk on the basalt landforms as if you were in the wilderness of Mars. Wander slowly along the volcanic trails, pick up natural volcanic rocks, take wilderness photos, and wait for the sunset over the volcanic grassland.
- In the evening, stay in a characteristic homestay near the volcano. Away from urban light pollution, you can admire the pure grassland starry sky at night and enjoy the tranquility of the wilderness.
Tips: The ultraviolet radiation in the volcanic area is extremely strong; prepare full sun protection. The volcanic rock road is uneven; wear non-slip sports shoes. Do not randomly carve or damage volcanic rock mass to protect geological relics.
Day 2: Wulan Hada Volcano → Dahongshan Danxia | Encounter the Red Secret of the Grassland
- In the morning, you can freely enjoy the morning light of the volcanic grassland and breathe the fresh wilderness air.
- After breakfast, depart and travel along the grassland highway to Dahongshan (Naomugeng Mountain) Danxia Secret Realm. Along the way, there are endless primitive grasslands, scattered cattle and sheep, and rolling tumbleweeds. You can stop to take photos at any time.
- In the afternoon, deeply wander around Dahongshan. The crimson cliffs, carved by wind erosion for thousands of years, have distinct layers and a magnificent shape. Climb high to overlook the red mountains and green grassland reflecting each other in the distance, creating a strong atmosphere. Wait for the Danxia sunset, where the light and shadow dye the entire mountain red — the perfect time for photography.
- In the evening, check into a nearby town and enjoy the quiet night of the grassland and mountains.
Tips: Dahongshan is a primitive wild scenic spot with no shops for supplies; prepare enough water and snacks in advance. It is windy and dry; prepare a windproof jacket and moisturizing products.
Day 3: Dahongshan → Shitiaoshan → Gongbaolag Royal Grassland
- After breakfast, depart for the Internet-famous geological secret Shitiaoshan. The entire mountain presents regular columnar joints, and the natural rock lines are like the strings of the earth, standing in the wilderness grassland, simple yet visually striking. Wander leisurely at the foot and hillside of the mountain, observe the volcanic geological texture up close, and quietly feel the uncanny craftsmanship of nature.
- In the afternoon, drive into Gongbaolag Royal Grassland, which is the closest and best-preserved primitive ecological royal grassland to Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, once serving as the imperial pasture in ancient times. The grassland stretches endlessly with gentle terrain, free from excessive commercial noise — only pure grassland green, gentle wind and flocks of cattle and sheep.
- You can wander freely on the grassland, blow the wind and daydream, wait for the grassland sunset, check into a characteristic residence on the grassland, and sit around at night to feel the grassland breeze and look up at the sky full of stars.
Tips: Do not randomly drive into private pastures on the grassland to respect the rights and interests of herdsmen; the temperature difference is large in the evening, so add clothes in time to keep warm.
Day 4: Gongbaolag Grassland → Xilingol Wilderness Highway → Return to Ulanqab & Journey Conclusion
- In the morning, enjoy the quiet morning light of the grassland, wander along the riverside grassland, and bid farewell to the primitive grassland scenery in an immersive way.
- After breakfast, slowly travel through the classic Xilingol wilderness highway. Along the way, the view is boundless, the grassland undulates continuously, and the highway stretches straight to the horizon. Every shot is worthy of a desktop wallpaper, and you can stop to play easily while walking.
- In the afternoon, slowly return to Ulanqab. You can freely wander the local streets, taste Mongolian characteristic food, and then depart calmly according to your flight or high-speed railway schedule, successfully ending the 4-day Ulanqab-Xilingol hidden gem loop tour.
Tips: When driving on grassland highways, pay attention to avoiding flocks of cattle and sheep; sort out your luggage in advance for the return trip, and reserve sufficient transportation time to avoid rushing.
