Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrive Taiyuan · Architecture Pre-Lecture

Group arrival and hotel check-in. Evening academic lecture: Ancient Chinese wooden architecture evolution, Dougong function, and northern Chinese architectural characteristics. Students receive field observation manuals and sketch tasks. Overnight in Taiyuan.

Day 2: Jinci Temple Architecture Study → Transfer to Pingyao

In-depth study of Jinci’s ancient wooden halls, bridge structures and carved art. Students record structural differences between Song and Ming architecture. Afternoon transfer to Pingyao. Walk ancient city wall to analyze military defense design, gate tower structure and city layout logic. Overnight in Pingyao ancient city.

Day 3: Pingyao Ancient City Architectural Field Research

Full-day city-wide field study. Explore traditional merchant courtyards, old bank buildings, ancient streets and traditional archway structures. Students complete structured observation tasks: courtyard symmetry, roof design, window carving and residential functional layout. Evening architectural sharing session.

Day 4: Shuanglin Temple & Zhenguo Temple Art Study

Morning visit Shuanglin Temple, famous for thousands of well-preserved colorful clay sculptures. Students study Buddhist figure modeling, colour symbolism and Ming-dynasty artistic styles. Afternoon visit Zhenguo Temple, one of China’s best-preserved Tang wooden buildings. Learn ancient mortise-and-tenon structure and earthquake-resistant architectural wisdom.

Day 5: Sketching Practice · Final Presentation & Departure

Morning guided sketching session in ancient streets. Students select their favorite architectural details for creation. Afternoon group presentation and academic summary. Award study certificates and depart.
