It neatly brings together the most iconic sites of northern Shanxi, pairing the dramatic Buddhist art of Datong with the intact commercial old-world charm of Pingyao. Tour Highlights
Day 1: Arrival in Datong. Our English-speaking guide and private driver will meet you at Datong Airport / Datong High-Speed Railway Station. Transfer to your centrally located hotel in Datong. After check-in and a short rest, take a leisurely evening walk along the Datong Ancient City Wall. Enjoy the soft night lights of the restored old town. Dinner features classic local Shanxi food, including hand-pulled noodles and braised lamb. Overnight in Datong.
Day 2: Full day at Yungang Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your guide will walk you through the major grotto caves, explaining the history of Northern Wei Buddhism, stone carving techniques and the stories behind the giant Buddha statues. We will arrange a lunch break at a local restaurant near the site. In the afternoon, drive to the Hanging Temple, built into the cliffside more than 1,500 years ago. Learn about its unique architectural design that defies gravity. Return to Datong in the late afternoon. Free evening for rest or casual stroll. Overnight in Datong.
Day 3: Early morning departure for Yingxian Wooden Pagoda (Sakyamuni Pagoda of Fogong Temple). This is the oldest and tallest fully wooden pagoda still standing in the world. The guide will explain its sophisticated timber bracket system that survived earthquakes for centuries. After the visit, we have lunch in Yingxian, then drive south toward Pingyao. Upon arrival, check into a well-selected boutique hotel inside Pingyao Ancient City. No heavy traffic inside the old town. Walk up to the city wall before sunset to enjoy panoramic views of the grey tile rooftops. Overnight inside Pingyao Ancient City.
Day 4: Morning exploration of Pingyao Ancient City. Visit Rishengchang Draft Bank, the first bank in ancient China, the ancient county government office, and the old Ming-Qing commercial street. Wander narrow lanes to see traditional courtyard homes. Stop for a tasting of Pingyao beef and local snacks. After lunch, continue exploring small heritage museums and watch traditional folk performances if available. Your tour concludes after sightseeing. Transfer to Taiyuan Airport / Pingyao High-Speed Station for your onward flight or train.
