The famous "Ji-shaped" great bend of the Yellow River is the key area where Yellow River civilization meets northern frontier Great Wall culture. Starting from Taiyuan and ending in Hohhot, this 9-day academic tour focuses on loess plateau landforms, ancient Shanxi merchant culture, border defense history and farming- nomadic cultural fusion. Participants will visit Laoniuwan where the river meets the Great Wall, Pingyao Ancient City and characteristic loess cave villages, learning the unique geographical and historical significance of the Yellow River loop region.
Day 1: Arrival in Taiyuan | Check-in & Tour Opening Briefing
Arrive at Taiyuan Wusu International Airport, hotel check-in and rest. Receive professional study briefing about the Yellow River Great Bend and Great Wall border culture. Brief introduction to loess plateau geographical features. Overnight in Taiyuan.
Day 2: Taiyuan Urban & Shanxi River Basin Culture Study

Drive to Pingyao Ancient City, a well-preserved ancient county along the Yellow River basin. Study the rise and development of Shanxi merchant culture, learn how the Yellow River's geographical environment influenced ancient trade routes. Walk through ancient streets and experience traditional ancient city life. Overnight in Pingyao ancient city homestay.
Day 4: Pingyao to Loess Plateau | Cave Dwelling Culture Experience
Travel to core loess plateau areas, visit characteristic loess cave dwellings. Learn the construction principle of cave dwellings adapting to loess landform and dry climate. Experience the traditional living culture of farmers in the Yellow River Great Bend area. Overnight in local village.
Day 5: Laoniuwan | Yellow River & Great Wall Intersection Study
Visit Laoniuwan Scenic Area, the unique spot where the Yellow River and the Great Wall intersect. On-site study of the geographical pattern of the Yellow River’s Ji-shaped bend. Learn the ancient border defense history and the collision and integration of farming and nomadic civilizations. Overnight in nearby scenic area.
Day 6: Great Bend Ecological & Geological Field Study
Conduct field investigation on loess plateau soil erosion, river sediment accumulation and ecological protection. Observe the landform changes of the Yellow River Great Bend. Complete geographical study records and group discussions. Overnight in local hotel.
Day 7: Border Ancient Pass Cultural Tour
Visit ancient border passes along the Great Bend, learn the military defense system in ancient northern China. Understand the historical conflicts and cultural exchanges between Central Plains farming civilization and northern nomadic civilization. Overnight in regional central city.
Day 8: Drive to Hohhot | Grassland & River Culture Transition
Travel to Hohhot, observe the geographical transition from loess plateau to grassland. Learn the cultural integration characteristics of the Yellow River Great Bend frontier area. Experience Mongolian and Han mixed folk culture. Overnight in Hohhot.
Day 9: Hohhot Study Summary & Departure
Sort out the whole journey's frontier culture and geographical study gains. Closing sharing session. Transfer to Hohhot Baita International Airport for departure.
