International credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted at major hotels and high-end shopping malls, but they are not widely accepted at local shops, markets, restaurants, or on public transport.
What you should do:
- Before arrival: Download and link your international credit card to Alipay or WeChat Pay. Both apps now support foreign cards.
- Bring cash as backup: While cash is still legal tender, some small vendors may prefer mobile payments. Carry a small amount of RMB for emergencies.
- Use ATMs: Bank of China and ICBC ATMs reliably accept foreign cards for cash withdrawals (check transaction fees).
- Keep your phone charged: Your phone is your wallet - carry a power bank at all times.
