Day 1: Jiayuguan Pass & Xuandi Great Wall
08:30–12:00 Jiayuguan Pass
Visit the core scenic spots of Jiayuguan Pass, including the inner city, outer city, Luo City and Weng City, to understand the structure and functions of the Ming Dynasty military defense system. Climb Guanghua Tower and Rouyuan Tower to overlook the Gobi and Qilian Mountains in the distance. Experience the ancient "pass document" activity and dress up as a Silk Road caravan to simulate the scene of ancient merchants passing through the pass.
12:00–14:00 Lunch Break
Rest after the morning tour and have lunch (local snacks are available nearby).
14:00–16:00 Xuandi Great Wall (Western Badaling)
Climb the Xuandi Great Wall, which is steep and known as the "Western Badaling". After reaching the top, take a short Gobi hike and view the integrated scenery of the Great Wall, Gobi and Qilian Mountains. The guide will introduce the historical role of the Xuandi Great Wall in military defense.
18:00 Check in to Jiayuguan City Hotel & Dinner
Check in to the reserved hotel in Jiayuguan City. Have dinner in the city, and you can taste local specialties: roasted lamb leg, Silk Road camel palm and cuoyu noodles.
Day 2: Jiayuguan → Dunhuang (Approx. 4 Hours) & Mingsha Mountain · Crescent Spring
08:00–12:00 Transfer from Jiayuguan to Dunhuang
Take a private air-conditioned bus to Dunhuang, with a driving time of about 4 hours. The guide will briefly introduce the precautions for the desert tour on the way.
12:00–13:30 Lunch in Dunhuang
Have lunch in Dunhuang urban area, mainly local delicacies, to replenish energy for the afternoon activity.
13:30–18:30 Mingsha Mountain · Crescent Spring (All Day Experience)
Participate in the following activities in the scenic area: 1. Ride a camel to cross the sand dunes and overlook the end of the Great Wall in the distance; 2. Experience sand sliding and desert motorcycle (optional, at your own expense); 3. Visit Crescent Spring, watch the desert spring wonder; 4. Take photos of the sunset, including the silhouettes of desert, Great Wall relics and camel caravans. The guide will arrange the time reasonably and remind everyone of the safety precautions in the desert.
18:30–20:00 Dinner & Free Time
Have dinner freely in Dunhuang, and you can stroll around the city after dinner to experience the local customs.
Day 3: Mogao Grottoes → Return
08:30–12:30 Visit Mogao Grottoes (World Art Treasure)
Visit the Mogao Grottoes with a professional guide, focusing on the murals and colored sculptures in the key grottoes. The guide will explain the historical background of the grottoes, the content of the murals and the connection between the Great Wall and the Silk Road civilization. Note: No photos are allowed inside the grottoes.
12:30–13:30 Lunch in Dunhuang
Have lunch near the Mogao Grottoes or return to the urban area for lunch, and taste more local delicacies.
13:30 Assembly & Return Transfer
Gather at the designated location on time, take the bus to return, and the 3-day tour ends.
Notes
Northwest China has an arid climate and extremely strong ultraviolet radiation. It is essential to bring sun protection products (sunscreen, sun hat), moisturizing products, sunglasses, and a mask to protect your skin and eyes from the sun and sand.
There is a large temperature difference between day and night in the northwest; please bring a thin jacket for warmth in the morning and evening. Jiayuguan Pass has strong winds, so pay attention to keeping warm when visiting.
The Xuandi Great Wall has steep steps, and Mingsha Mountain has soft sand; please wear comfortable and non-slip shoes for easy hiking and walking.
No photos are allowed inside the Mogao Grottoes to protect the murals and colored sculptures; please follow the scenic area regulations and the guide’s instructions.
Prepare enough water and energy snacks, as the desert and Gobi areas have few shops and the journey is relatively long.
