Destinations: Li River, Yangshuo by Bike, Longji Terraces
Guilin is the field laboratory of southern China - limestone karst peaks, underground rivers and terraced hillsides that teach geography, biology and ecology in the open air. This 6-day study trip floats the Li River, explores the karst by boat and bicycle, descends into a cave system, and climbs the Longji Rice Terraces into the villages of the Zhuang and Yao peoples. It is the ideal add-on for science and geography classes - and one of the most photographed landscapes on Earth.
Optional Extensions
Day 1 - Arrival & Orientation: Transfer from Guilin Liangjiang Airport (international flights connect via Hong Kong, Shanghai or Guangzhou). Evening welcome dinner and a short orientation session: a teacher-led briefing on karst geology - how rain, limestone and time built the landscape you will spend the week inside.
Day 2 - The Li River: Board a four-hour cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo along the Li River, the classic image of Chinese landscape painting. Your guide points out the named peaks - the Pencil Peak, the Nine Horses Fresco Hill - and explains how the river carved the karst. Disembark in Yangshuo, check in, and walk West Street in the evening.
Day 3 - Yangshuo by Bike & Village: Cycle the countryside on a graded route through the karst fields: rice paddies, water buffalo, and the silhouetted peaks of the "Moon Hill" area. Stop at a working village to visit a farmhouse and see rural life up close. Afternoon field-journal session: sketch the landscape and record observations on rock, soil and water.
Day 4 - Longji Rice Terraces: Drive to the Longji (Dragon's Backbone) Terraces, carved into the mountainside over centuries by the Zhuang people. Walk the ridge paths through the terraced amphitheatre, and visit a Zhuang village and a Yao long-hair village for a homestay-style lunch and a look at traditional dress and customs.
Day 5 - Underground Karst: Morning at the Reed Flute Cave, where underground rivers dissolved the limestone into a fantasy of stalactites and stalagmites, lit like a cathedral. Afternoon comparative session: above-ground versus underground karst, and how both shape the ecosystem. Farewell dinner with Guilin rice noodles.
Day 6 - Departure: Free morning for market shopping (the Yangshuo craft market is ideal), then transfer to the airport.
