China Buddhist Heritage Tour: Grottoes, Shaolin & the Sacred Island of Putuo (10 Days)
This 10-day journey follows Buddhism's path across China - from the imperial stone Buddhas of the north, through the living monastery of Shaolin, to the dawn bells of a sacred island. You begin in Beijing, with a quiet temple morning of chanting, sutra copying and prayer-bead making that teaches the rituals before the journey deepens. Then north to Datong, to stand before the colossal stone Buddhas of the Yungang Grottoes - the royal caves of the Northern Wei dynasty. South to Luoyang, where the Longmen Grottoes hold the serene Vairocana Buddha of the High Tang, and where the White Horse Temple marks the very birth of Chinese Buddhism. From there the journey turns to the living tradition: Shaolin Temple, cradle of Chan (Zen) Buddhism and the martial arts, where you sit in meditation, walk the ancient halls and talk with monks over tea. A flight south brings you to Hangzhou and the misty courtyards of Lingyin Temple, hidden among the tea hills, for temple architecture and a vegetarian zhai meal. The journey ends where the faith is most alive - Putuo Mountain, the island of Guanyin, where you sleep in a monastery, rise before dawn for the morning bell, and carry a lit lamp home. Along the way, English-speaking guides translate the chanting, decode the iconography, and turn every hall, cave and pagoda into a lesson in the mind that shaped China.
