Chinese folk sculpture turns the humblest material - a lump of clay, a ball of coloured dough - into living art: opera warriors no bigger than a thumb, plump smiling babies, tigers and legendary beasts painted in brilliant folk colours. This 8-day journey visits the three great schools of the craft and puts you in the studio with the masters themselves. You begin in Beijing, where the imperial city and its hutongs frame your first hands-on session of dough-figurine making. Then a short train ride takes you to Tianjin, home of the world-famous Clay Figurine Zhang (Ni Ren Zhang) - the 1840s studio whose lifelike opera figures once charmed the imperial court - for a master-led workshop on the city's ancient culture street. Finally you travel to Xi'an, the old capital, and out to Fengxiang county, where bold, colourful clay tigers and warriors glow with the vigour of ancient folk belief - and where you will paint your own folk figurine in a village studio. From imperial court favourite to village craft, this is the story of Chinese clay - and you will shape a piece of it yourself.

Best Time to Visit

• Spring (April – May) - the ideal season: mild temperatures for studio sessions and village excursions, the courtyard trees of Beijing and Tianjin in new leaf, and clear light for painting folk figurines.
• Autumn (September – November) - crisp, dry days across all three cities; October is especially pleasant in Xi'an and Fengxiang, with harvest-gold countryside around the clay-tiger village.
• Winter (December – February) - cold but wonderfully quiet: short queues at the Terracotta Army, unhurried studio time with the masters, and warm workshops away from the chill. Lantern Festival (February) lights up the Ancient Culture Street if your dates align.
• Summer (June – August) - hot and busy, especially at the Terracotta Army; mornings are best for outdoor sites, and the afternoons are perfect for cool indoor clay work.

Itinerary:

Day 1 - Beijing Arrival Arrive at Beijing Capital International Airport. Evening welcome dinner with Peking duck, and a first stroll through the illuminated hutongs of the Houhai lakeside. Overnight in Beijing.

Day 2 - Beijing: The Forbidden City & Your First Figurine Morning: a guided visit to the Forbidden City, where imperial art and the palace courtyards set the context for China's decorative traditions. Afternoon: join a dough-figurine workshop in a Beijing folk-art studio - meet your artist teacher, feel the steamed, coloured dough soften under your fingers, and shape your first small figure - a panda, a peach, or a tiny opera character - with patient, translated guidance. Your finished figurine is ready to take home the same day. Overnight in Beijing.

Day 3 - Beijing: Temple of Heaven & High-Speed Rail to Tianjin Morning: visit the Temple of Heaven, whose great blue-roofed halls have watched Beijing's folk life for six centuries - kite flyers, opera singers and tai chi practitioners still gather beneath its cypresses. Midday: take the 30-minute high-speed rail to Tianjin. Evening: walk the lantern-lit Ancient Culture Street, where folk-art shops, teahouses and clay-figurine stalls line the traditional facades. Overnight in Tianjin.

Day 4 - Tianjin: The Clay Figurine Zhang Studio & the Art of Opera Characters A full day with the great tradition: visit the Clay Figurine Zhang (Ni Ren Zhang) studio - founded in the 1840s by Zhang Mingshan - and its museum gallery, where tiny figures of opera heroes, folk legends and everyday life seem to breathe. Your artist teacher explains the secret of proportion and gesture that made these figurines court favourites, then guides you through shaping your own clay figure, letting it dry, and painting it with traditional colours. Later, browse the culture street for authentic master works to carry home. Overnight in Tianjin.

Day 5 - Tianjin to Xi'an: The Old Capital Morning: fly from Tianjin (or via Beijing) to Xi'an - the ancient capital where the Terracotta Warriors, China's most famous clay figures of all, stand guard. Afternoon: settle in and walk the City Wall at sunset, with its lanterns over the old town. Overnight in Xi'an.

Day 6 - Xi'an: The Terracotta Warriors & the City of Clay Morning: visit the Terracotta Army - thousands of life-size clay soldiers, each with a unique face, the ancestor of every clay figurine tradition in China. Your guide explains how the Qin dynasty's clay army connects to the folk sculptors who came after. Afternoon: explore the Muslim Quarter and its food streets, or visit the Shaanxi History Museum for a deeper view of Chinese sculpture. Overnight in Xi'an.

Day 7 - Xi'an to Fengxiang: The Folk Clay Tiger Village A full-day excursion into the countryside: drive to Fengxiang county (about 2 hours), home of the bold, brightly painted Fengxiang clay sculpture - tigers, warriors and legendary beasts covered with swirling patterns of red, green and gold. Visit a village workshop, meet the folk artists who carry the tradition, watch them model and paint, then paint your own clay tiger under their guidance - the classic folk-art souvenir. Lunch in the village, with local Shaanxi home cooking. Return to Xi'an in the evening. Overnight in Xi'an.

Day 8 - Xi'an Departure Free morning for a final visit to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda or last-minute souvenir shopping. Transfer to Xi'an Xianyang International Airport for departure - your clay tiger and your figurines, wrapped and boxed, travel home with you.
