City: Beijing
Our Beijing Hutong Walking Tour & Dumpling Making Workshop invites your overseas student group to step away from crowded tourist landmarks and wander the quiet, historic alleyways of old Beijing. Led by an English-speaking local guide, students walk through well-preserved hutong neighbourhoods around Shichahai, observing classic grey-brick courtyard houses known as siheyuan. The guide explains how ordinary Beijingers lived in these alleys for hundreds of years, sharing stories of family life, local customs and the ongoing preservation of Beijing’s traditional urban fabric. Students will notice old wooden gates, courtyard plants and small local shops, gaining a genuine understanding of the city's old-town lifestyle.
After the hutong walking tour, the group will visit a traditional courtyard house for a hands-on dumpling-making workshop. Under the guidance of a local host, students learn the full process: mixing filling, rolling dough wrappers, folding and pinching dumplings into classic shapes. Once finished, the dumplings are boiled, and everyone can taste the homemade meal together. The instructor also shares the cultural importance of dumplings in Chinese festivals and family gatherings.
PandaStudyTour fully manages all logistics of this experience, including professional English guides, courtyard venue booking, all raw materials, group transfers and safety briefings. This combined hutong and dumpling workshop can be seamlessly designed as one highlight within your China study tour, Beijing school exchange or Mandarin summer camp itinerary. We can adjust the activity length and difficulty level for primary, middle, high school and university groups. It is a beloved hands-on cultural activity that lets international students explore old Beijing architecture and authentic Chinese food culture in one session.
