City: Beijing
Our Beijing Shadow Puppetry Workshop lets your student group explore the magical folk art of shadow puppetry, a treasured Chinese intangible cultural heritage. The experience begins with a live shadow puppet show performed by professional artists. Using leather puppets illuminated against a white screen, performers tell classic Chinese folk tales with music, voices and fluid puppet movements. The bilingual host explains the story plots, character roles and the symbolic colours of the puppets, helping international students easily follow the performance.
After the show, the hands-on workshop begins. Students learn how to manipulate shadow puppets with control sticks, trying to make the puppets walk, wave and perform simple movements behind the screen. They also get to decorate their own simple leather shadow puppet cutouts, creating a personalised puppet souvenir to bring back home. The master shares the history of shadow puppetry, how this art form spread across China and how it has entertained ordinary families for centuries.
PandaStudyTour arranges theatre or workshop venue booking, puppet artists, craft materials and group transportation. This shadow puppetry experience can be fully integrated into your China study tour, Beijing school exchange or Mandarin summer camp programme. We can adjust the workshop difficulty for all age groups, from primary school students to university delegations. For groups with deeper cultural learning goals, we can extend the session and add backstage introduction. This lively, visual folk art activity is consistently a favourite highlight for foreign student groups visiting Beijing.
