City: Guangzhou
Guangxiu has developed for more than 1,000 years. It rose alongside the Maritime Silk Road; in the Ming and Qing dynasties, embroidered shawls, hanging scrolls and clothing accessories made by Guangzhou embroiderers were shipped to Europe and the Middle East, winning high praise from overseas nobles. Guangxiu features bold and bright colours, lively and natural patterns, and dense, precise stitching. It focuses on depicting animals, flowers and birds, with vivid and lifelike details. The famous Manila shawl, a world-famous export product, is a representative work of Cantonese embroidery.

At the beginning of the workshop, the heritage master will display antique Guangxiu pieces and explain the history, material selection and core stitching methods. Participants will learn basic hand stitches step by step, including flat stitch and seed stitch, on pre-prepared fabric bases. You can make small embroidery works such as bookmarks, flower ornaments or fan surface embroidery. The bilingual tutor will help you handle thin silk threads and fix mistakes, so even participants with zero embroidery experience can finish a satisfying piece.
Adult leisure travellers can enjoy this peaceful handcraft time, slow down and experience the beauty of traditional oriental craftsmanship. The finished embroidery makes a delicate cultural souvenir. For overseas student delegations, this workshop serves as a field research activity. Students can interview the embroidery inheritor, explore the relationship between Guangxiu craft and ancient overseas trade, and compare the aesthetic differences between Eastern and Western embroidery art. They can combine this experience with visits to Chen Clan Academy to learn how embroidery patterns also appeared on Lingnan architectural decorations.
PandaStudyTour selects well-established Guangxiu heritage studios, provides all silk threads, fabrics and tools, and controls group size to guarantee sufficient interaction. We can tailor the workshop length and project difficulty according to your group. This embroidery experience can be added to your Guangzhou Lingnan cultural tour or China heritage study tour.
