City: Guangzhou
Xiguan copper craft has a long history. In old Guangzhou, copper shops lined Enning Road, and handmade copper pots, copper spoons, copper plates and copper lanterns were daily necessities for local Cantonese families. Craftsmen shape copper purely by repeated hammering, without welding. The craft was listed as Guangzhou municipal intangible cultural heritage, and today masters still keep this traditional hand-forging technique alive in Yongqingfang and Xiguan old streets.

In this workshop, participants first watch a live demonstration by the copper master. You will learn how artisans select soft copper sheets, adjust the metal texture by hammering, and create textures and patterns on copper surfaces. Then every guest gets a safe copper blank and small hammer. Under bilingual guidance, you can hammer simple patterns, make a copper coaster, small copper spoon or decorative copper pendant. You will feel how repeated beating changes the shape and texture of the metal, and understand the meaning of “thousands of hammer strokes make a copper treasure”.
For adult leisure tourists, this unique hands-on activity brings a deep taste of old Xiguan life. The handmade copper piece is a special, durable souvenir from Guangzhou. For overseas student study groups, this session becomes a social and cultural research project. Students can learn how copper craft developed with the daily life of Lingnan residents, investigate the rise and transformation of Xiguan's old handicraft industry, and discuss how traditional crafts adapt to modern life. Students can combine this experience with Xiguan city walking tour to understand the old town's industrial and living history.
PandaStudyTour books authentic Xiguan copper craft studios in advance, prepares safe tools and protective equipment, and arranges bilingual interpreters. We can adjust the project complexity for different age groups. This copper beating experience can be built into your Xiguan cultural walking tour or Guangzhou intangible heritage study tour.
