Our Cloisonné Enamel (Jingtailan) Hands-on Experience lets your student group explore one of China's most sophisticated royal crafts, listed as national intangible cultural heritage. The experience starts with a guided visit to a Beijing cloisonné factory and exhibition hall. Students view magnificent antique and modern cloisonné artworks, and watch master artisans demonstrate the traditional 108-step production process. The English-speaking guide explains how cloisonné was once exclusively made for imperial palaces during the Ming and Qing dynasties, and the skills of bending fine copper wires, inlaying them onto a copper base, and filling colourful mineral enamel powder.
After the museum viewing, the hands-on workshop begins. Students get to try the core cloisonné techniques: bending thin metal wires to form patterns and filling enamel pigment into the wire frames. The workshop uses simplified, student-friendly projects such as coasters or small decorative plaques, so participants can finish their own cloisonné artwork to take home. The master walks around to offer individual guidance and answer students' questions about this delicate craft.
