Making Ciba Glutinous Rice Cakes

City: Guangzhou

Ciba - glutinous rice cakes - is festival food across southern China. In Miao villages, families steam sticky rice, pour it into a stone mortar, and pound it with heavy wooden mallets until it becomes a smooth, elastic dough, then shape it into cakes and coat them with soybean flour or honey. The rhythm of the pounding, done by two people in turns, is a cheerful village ritual - and visitors are invited to join in.

A PandaStudyTour ciba-making session happens in a real village setting: you help steam the rice, take turns with the mallet (a favorite moment for kids and adults alike), shape the warm dough with your hands, and eat your creation on the spot with the host family. The whole activity takes about 1–1.5 hours and fits naturally into a village visit.

It is also a window into food culture, community cooperation and festival life - the kind of memory no museum can provide.

How PandaStudyTour delivers it: We arrange sessions with Miao host families or village cultural centers, handle the ingredients and venue, provide a bilingual host, and combine the activity with village walks, long-table banquets or festival visits.
