Xilankapu, Tujia traditional brocade, is a nationally recognised intangible cultural heritage and known as the "wordless epic" of the Tujia ethnic group. For centuries, Tujia artisans wove colourful geometric patterns on simple backstrap looms, recording creation myths, mountain life, totems and community stories into textile designs. In this hands-on workshop hosted by local heritage inheritors, overseas students get the rare chance to sit at authentic traditional waist looms and try basic weaving techniques.

Under step-by-step guidance, participants learn the classic eight-character pattern, one of the foundational Xilankapu motifs. Each student creates a small finished piece such as a woven coaster or decorative hanging charm they can take home. The artisan shares the meaning behind each pattern, explaining how Tujia people used brocade for wedding textiles, home fabrics and ceremonial objects. It is a quiet, focused cultural experience that connects international young learners with minority history and traditional craft thinking.
PandaStudyTour arranges this Xilankapu weaving workshop for your study delegation. We book sessions with official intangible heritage inheritors, prepare looms, threads and all workshop materials, and arrange English interpretation for the craft explanation. We adjust the complexity of the project for different age groups: simpler patterns for younger students and more detailed designs for high school and university groups. This workshop is a core cultural module of our Zhangjiajie Study Tour Experience, and it can be scheduled alongside other Tujia and Miao craft activities. We provide a heritage learning worksheet and include this workshop’s completion on students’ final study certificates.
