City: Zhangjiajie
Hand-waving Dance is the most famous communal folk dance of the Tujia people, performed during seasonal worship, harvest festivals and village gatherings. Zhanggu Dance, the drum dance, is another energetic Tujia folk performance accompanied by rhythmic drum beats. Unlike static museum learning, this interactive workshop invites overseas students to move together, follow local folk dance teachers and learn the basic steps, gestures and formation changes of these traditional dances.

The dance teacher explains the origin of each movement: many gestures imitate farming, hunting, weaving and daily mountain life of ancient Tujia villages. The whole group practises step by step, first in simple lines and then in a circle formation. This activity works wonderfully for bonfire evening programmes, ice-breakers and cross-cultural sharing nights. Many teachers compare this folk dance experience to Tai Chi lessons in Beijing parks - an embodied, lively way to engage with living Chinese traditional culture.
PandaStudyTour arranges this Tujia folk dance workshop for student groups visiting Zhangjiajie. We book local professional folk instructors, prepare traditional drums and performance space, and coordinate evening bonfire venues upon request. Our English guide explains the cultural background and supports the teacher to give clear instructions to international students. We adjust the pace for younger learners or larger groups, and we can pair this dance session with a Tujia food-making workshop or folk music lesson. It is a brilliant social module that helps overseas students connect emotionally with local ethnic culture as part of our Zhangjiajie Study Tour Experience.
