Wing Chun originated in southern China and was passed down in Guangdong. It is a compact, efficient martial art focusing on centreline defence, close-range hand techniques and stable stances. Unlike large, powerful martial arts styles, Wing Chun follows the philosophy of using softness to overcome strength. The most famous student of Wing Chun grandmaster Yip Man is Bruce Lee, who learned Wing Chun in his youth and developed his own Jeet Kune Do based on Wing Chun principles, bringing southern Chinese kung fu to the whole world. Yongqingfang in Xiguan also preserves Bruce Lee’s former residence, creating a perfect context to learn this culture.
In this beginner lesson, professional local Wing Chun coaches will start with a bilingual introduction to Wing Chun history and Bruce Lee’s cultural story. Participants will learn the basic “two-character goat stance”, fundamental hand shapes and simple, practical hand movements. No prior martial arts experience is required. The coach will correct posture for every participant, teach basic defence concepts, and share the famous philosophy of Bruce Lee: “Be water, my friend”. At the end of the session, visitors can practice simple partner drills and take group photos in the training space.
For adult leisure travellers, this active experience is a wonderful way to feel authentic Chinese martial arts culture, different from passive museum visits.
