Hand-carved wooden mooncake molds have been essential kitchen tools for Cantonese families for hundreds of years. Craftsmen select solid pear wood, then carve delicate patterns including peony, lotus, jade rabbit, carp and Chinese blessing characters on the wood. Every pattern carries beautiful wishes: carp symbolizes abundance, peony stands for prosperity, and the jade rabbit is the classic symbol of Mid-Autumn Festival and family reunion. In the past, every family would own custom wooden mooncake molds to make homemade mooncakes for the annual moon festival.

In this workshop, the wood carving master will show antique mooncake molds and explain the festival culture behind each pattern. Participants will learn basic wood carving skills, including how to draw drafts on the wood blank, carve along lines and polish the surface. Beginners will use safe carving tools to finish a small carved wooden mold or decorative wooden plaque. The bilingual tutor will guide you step by step to avoid injury and help you polish your final work.
Adult leisure travellers can enjoy this quiet wood carving experience and take home their handmade mooncake mold as a unique souvenir of Lingnan festival culture. For overseas student delegations, this activity supports cultural anthropology research. Students study how folk crafts carry festival customs, analyse the symbolic language of traditional Chinese patterns, and learn how food and folk art are closely connected. This workshop can be paired with a Cantonese food tour to explore the full story of Cantonese food culture.
PandaStudyTour cooperates with local wood carving artisans, provides pre-cut wood blanks and safe carving tools, and arranges bilingual on-site instruction. We can adjust project difficulty for different age groups. This wood carving workshop can be added into your Guangzhou food culture tour or folk custom study tour.
