Yunnan Intangible Heritage Handcraft Workshops

City: Yunnan

In Beijing, international student groups often take part in classic Chinese craft lessons including calligraphy and paper-cutting, which help learners explore traditional aesthetics and Chinese culture through hand-making. PandaStudyTour delivers equally immersive, hands-on intangible heritage workshops in Yunnan, showcasing the unique crafts of Yunnan's ethnic minority groups. Every workshop is guided by certified local folk masters, and students can take home their finished handmade works as souvenirs.

Yunnan Intangible Heritage Handcraft Workshops

In Dali, home to the Bai minority, we host the famous Bai Indigo Tie-Dye Workshop in Zhoucheng Village. Students fold, bind and stitch cloth, then dye it with natural plant indigo to create unique blue-and-white textiles such as scarves or tote bags. Similar to making paper-cut art in Beijing, this activity lets students understand traditional patterns and handcraft techniques. We also offer the Bai Three-Course Tea Ritual, where students learn the traditional tea ceremony and taste three-flavor tea, matching the tea culture experience available in Beijing. Additional Dali options include Heqing Silver Forging & Bai Woodblock Printing, where students hammer small silver ornaments and print folk New Year paintings with master craftsmen.

Lijiang's Naxi culture offers a one-of-a-kind writing workshop: Dongba Bark Paper Making & Pictographic Writing. Students create handmade bark paper and write their own names using Dongba hieroglyphs - the world's only living pictographic writing system, comparable to Chinese calligraphy lessons in Beijing. We also run the Ancient Tea-Horse Road Field Study, where students walk caravan trails and map ancient trade routes, combining history learning with outdoor walking.

In Xishuangbanna's Dai villages, students can try Palm-Leaf Scripture Carving, engraving simple Dai characters on palm leaves to explore ancient Dai writing and Buddhist culture. There is also Dai Pottery Making, where students knead clay and hand-shape traditional Dai pottery, similar to cloisonné craft classes in Beijing.

Jianshui provides Jianshui Purple Pottery Making. Working with local folk artisans, students complete the full pottery production process, from kneading clay to carving decorative patterns on the finished piece.

PandaStudyTour can arrange single half-day craft workshops or bundle multiple handcraft sessions into a cultural study tour. We supply all workshop materials, bilingual explanation and heritage master guidance. These craft activities can be paired with local school exchange, so international students can create art together with Chinese peers. We tailor workshop complexity for primary, middle and high school participants.
