Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics was founded in October 1952 and was one of the first higher education institutions specializing in aeronautics established by the People's Republic of China. In 1978, it was designated as a national key university by the State Council; in 1981, with the approval of the State Council, it became one of the first universities in the country authorized to confer doctoral degrees; in 1996, it was included in the national "Project 211"; In 2000, it established a Graduate School with the approval of the Ministry of Education; in 2011, it became a key university under the "985 Project's Innovation Platform for Disciplines of Strength"; and in 2017, it was included in the national "Double First-Class" initiative, with three disciplines—Aeronautics and Astronautics Science and Technology, Mechanics, and Control Science and Engineering—selected for the second round of "First-Class Disciplines" development. The university is currently under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. In December 2012 and April 2021, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Civil Aviation Administration of China successively signed agreements to jointly develop Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. In 2018 and 2023, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Education, and the Jiangsu Provincial Government signed agreements on two separate occasions to jointly develop Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics as a tripartite partnership.
