Xi'an University of Science and Technology has a long history and a rich heritage. The university's history can be traced back to the Department of Mining and Metallurgy at the College of Engineering of Beiyang University, established in 1895. In 1938, it was relocated and merged into the Department of Mining and Metallurgy at the Northwest Institute of Technology. In 1957, it was incorporated into Xi'an Jiaotong University, and in 1958, it was separated from Xi'an Jiaotong University to form Xi'an Mining College, which was one of only two five-year undergraduate institutions under the former Ministry of Coal Industry at that time. In 1998, the university adopted a model of "joint central and local administration, with local management as the primary responsibility" and was transferred to the jurisdiction of Shaanxi Province. In 1999, it was renamed Xi'an University of Science and Technology, and in 2003, it was renamed Xi'an University of Science and Technology. Building on a century of tradition in geological and mining disciplines, the university has developed a distinctive academic framework characterized by energy and safety disciplines as its strengths and hallmarks. Related disciplines have developed steadily with the support of these core fields, while emerging and interdisciplinary fields are rapidly advancing around them. The university serves as a vital base for talent cultivation and scientific and technological innovation in the energy and safety sectors in western China. In 2022, the discipline of Safety Science and Engineering achieved a historic breakthrough in the fifth round of the National Discipline Assessment, ranking among the top tier nationwide. Five disciplines—Engineering, Materials Science, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science and Ecology, and Chemistry—entered the top 1% of global rankings in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), placing the university at the forefront among provincial universities. The university boasts a comprehensive system for cultivating talent at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels. It currently offers 7 postdoctoral research stations, 7 first-level doctoral programs, 26 first-level master's programs, and 60 undergraduate majors. Among these, 20 are designated as National First-Class Undergraduate Majors, 8 are National Distinctive Majors, and 19 have passed the China Engineering Education Accreditation
