A Day of Shaolin Kung Fu: Training Where the Legends Train
Some places you visit. And some places you train. For anyone who grew up on kung fu films, the Shaolin Temple at the foot of Mount Song in Dengfeng, Henan, is the second kind of place. It is the birthplace of Shaolin Kung Fu, the cradle of Zen Buddhism's warrior monks, and - for one unforgettable day - it can be your training ground.
The journey begins early. From Zhengzhou, the provincial capital with its high-speed rail links, it is a short drive south to Dengfeng. The landscape rises toward Mount Song, one of China's five sacred mountains, and somewhere among those peaks the temple has stood for more than 1,500 years. You are not here to watch a show. You are here to learn.
A lesson, not a performance
Our Shaolin Kung Fu lesson is a genuine training session, taught by an instructor who trained in the Shaolin tradition - not a staged demonstration for tourists. You start the way every student starts: with the basics. The horse stance (mabu), the foundation of all Shaolin kung fu. Punches, blocks, the first forms. You will sweat. You will laugh. By the end of the hour, you will have learned a short sequence of real movements that you can practise at home - and you will understand, in your own muscles, why the monks of Shaolin are famous for discipline.
The lesson is adapted to you. Beginners receive a gentle introduction to fundamentals; experienced practitioners and athletes can be pushed harder, with advanced forms or weapons basics (with full safety equipment and supervision). Children love it - many of our family groups describe the kung fu class as the highlight of their trip. And if you are travelling as a school or university group, we regularly arrange longer programmes with structured training over several days.
Where the session happens
We offer two settings, and both are special:
At the Shaolin Temple area - train in the shadow of the temple itself, surrounded by the pagoda forest and the sound of chanting. For many visitors, this is the dream.
At a professional martial arts school near Dengfeng - the region is home to some of the world's largest and most respected kung fu academies, where thousands of students train daily from childhood. Watching (and joining) their world is an experience no film can capture.
Whichever you choose, we handle everything: transport from Zhengzhou or Dengfeng, the scheduling, the instructor, translation, and time to explore the temple complex - including the famous pagoda forest and the hall where monks once practised their punches into the floor.
The culture behind the kicks
A Shaolin lesson is also a lesson in philosophy. The monks' tradition unites Chan (Zen) Buddhism with martial training: discipline of body is discipline of mind. Your instructor will explain how each stance, each breath, each repetition carries meaning - how the famous "thirteen staff techniques" and the legendary "18 Luohan hands" grew from centuries of monastic practice. Travellers leave not just with sore muscles, but with a real understanding of why Shaolin Kung Fu is UNESCO-listed as part of China's intangible cultural heritage.
