This is the trip for travellers who want to see the real China, not the postcard version. You start in Guizhou, where you'll visit Asia's largest waterfall and then travel to Taipan Village - the birthplace of "Village BA", the open-air village basketball league that has taken China by storm. You'll sit on the free concrete stands among 20,000 drumming, gong-beating locals and watch amateur farmers, teachers and artisans play their hearts out under floodlights. From the court, the journey winds through the world's largest Miao village and the watertown of Zhenyuan, before ending in Guilin - the karst landscape that has inspired Chinese painters for a thousand years. Basketball, minority villages and world-class scenery: a route no ordinary China tour can offer.

The Village BA experience - what to know before you go

• It is free. The village stadium has open, tiered concrete stands; tickets are not needed — arrive early for a good spot, especially for the evening games, which are the liveliest.
• The atmosphere is the show. Gongs, drums, fireworks-adjacent energy, costumed dancers between quarters and a crowd that treats every basket like a final — travellers who do not care about basketball still call it the highlight of their China trip.
• What you'll eat. Sour soup fish, Miao cured pork, glutinous rice cakes, barbecued skewers and locally brewed rice wine, all sold by villagers beside the court.
• What to bring. A light jacket (Guizhou nights in early October can be cool), a portable cushion for the concrete stands, and some cash for the food stalls.

Practical information

• Best window: 27 Sep – 5 Oct 2026 national finals. Other Village BA windows in 2026 included early April and mid-August; our October dates are the most comfortable weather-wise and the most competitive on the court.
• Getting around: High-speed rail throughout — Guiyang → Kaili (40 min), Kaili → Guilin (2 hrs) — plus short private transfers to Taipan, Xijiang and Zhenyuan.
• Accommodation: Guiyang · Taipan/Kaili (for the games) · Xijiang Miao guesthouse · Zhenyuan riverside inn · Guilin.
• Good to know: Early October is China's National Day holiday, so book hotels and rail tickets well in advance; our team handles all bookings and seat arrangements at the stadium.

Optional extension (add 2 days). Continue from Guilin to Yangshuo for the Li River cruise and a cycling trip through the karst valleys, or add a day at the nearby Longji Rice Terraces for the most photographed autumn hillside in China.

Itinerary:

Day 1 - Sat 27 Sep · Arrival in Guiyang. Transfer and hotel check-in. In the evening, walk the Jiaxiu Pavilion on its island in the Nanming River and try your first taste of Guizhou - the province's famous sour-spicy soup fish (suantang yu), sour plum drink and guizhou dumplings (siwawa).

Day 2 - Sun 28 Sep · Huangguoshu Waterfall. A full day at Huangguoshu, Asia's largest waterfall (77.8 m high, 101 m wide), including the trail behind the falling water and the lush Tianxingqiao karst garden. Return toward the Guiyang–Kaili corridor for the night.

Day 3 - Mon 29 Sep · To Taipan Village: Your First Night of Village BA. Take the high-speed rail from Guiyang to Kaili South (about 40 minutes), then a short drive to Taipan Village, the birthplace of Village BA. Settle in, then in the evening walk into the stadium - entry is free, the stands rise on all sides, and the atmosphere is electric: gongs, drums, village elders and cheering children, all watching farmers, teachers and artisans play at a level that surprises every first-time visitor. Don't worry about not speaking Chinese - the game, the music and the food need no translation.

Day 4 - Tue 30 Sep · Taipan by Day, Xijiang by Night. Morning at leisure: wander the court-side market, where villagers sell Miao embroidery, silver trinkets, sour-soup snacks and home-cooked meals. If the schedule includes daytime matches, watch another session. After lunch, drive to Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village (about 1.5 hours) - the world's largest Miao settlement, with a thousand wooden stilt houses stacked on the hillsides. Evening: a traditional long-table banquet, then the famous night view of the village lit up across the valley.

Day 5 - Wed 1 Oct · Zhenyuan Ancient Town. Morning in Xijiang: watch Miao women embroider and visit a silversmith's workshop. Then drive to Zhenyuan (about 2 hours), a 2,000-year-old riverside town where the Wuyang River winds in a dramatic S-bend beneath ancient architecture. Evening: boat or stroll along the illuminated riverfront.

Day 6 - Thu 2 Oct · Zhenyuan to Guilin. Take the high-speed rail from Kaili (or nearby) to Guilin (about 2 hours). Afternoon: walk the city's Two Rivers and Four Lakes water system and the old East West Alley, or visit the Reed Flute Cave limestone cavern.

Day 7 - Fri 3 Oct · Guilin & Departure. Morning at leisure: you can choose a Li River cruise, climb Fubo Hill for the panoramic view of the karst peaks, or browse the famous "Guilin rice noodles" before your transfer to Guilin Liangjiang International Airport for your onward flight.
