Destinations: Harbin, Changchun, Shenyang
This multi-city academic winter study tour takes students across three core cities of Northeast China, tracing thousands of years of Manchu imperial history, Russian colonial influence, early Chinese industrial development and modern cross-cultural transformation. Starting in multicultural Harbin, moving south by high-speed train to Changchun and finishing in Shenyang, this program creates a chronological field classroom for students studying world history, architecture and ethnic culture. Students compare the distinct urban identities of each city: Harbin as a melting pot of Russian and Northeast Chinese culture, Changchun as a witness of modern 20th century history and film heritage, and Shenyang as the birthplace of the Qing Dynasty and ancient Manchu imperial capital. Visits to palaces, museums, former industrial sites and winter folk villages allow students to examine ethnic traditions, border culture and the impact of winter geography on regional lifestyles. With guided reading materials, on-site historical worksheets, and cross-city comparative analysis tasks, international students build a holistic understanding of Northeast China's layered history, far beyond typical winter sightseeing.
