Starting in Shanghai, students explore unique Shikumen lilong neighborhoods, Yu Garden and the Bund, learning how Shanghai blended Western architecture and Chinese local culture over the past two centuries. By high-speed bullet train, the group travels to Suzhou, the home of classical Chinese gardens and world-famous silk craftsmanship. Students will study garden design philosophy, take a canal boat ride through ancient water towns, visit silk workshops and learn intangible heritage crafts. Throughout the program, guided cultural worksheets, group discussions and hands-on workshops help students compare ancient Jiangnan civilization with modern Shanghai.
