The classics: the Mogao Caves at Dunhuang (with optional mural-painting workshops), a camel ride at Mingsha Mountain, the Jiayuguan Fortress, the Zhangye Danxia rainbow mountains, Xi'an's ancient city walls and Muslim Quarter, and in Xinjiang, Uyghur culture with bazaars, music and food. Tang sancai pottery making is a hands-on favourite.
Modern transport has transformed it - high-speed rail now links Xi'an, Lanzhou and beyond, and hotels along the corridor are well developed. We plan the pace to balance driving, rail and sightseeing, so you experience the romance of the route without roughing it.
A focused Silk Road experience needs about 5–7 days for the classic Xi'an–Dunhuang arc (including Jiayuguan and Zhangye). If you have less time, a two-to-three-day Dunhuang or Xi'an-focused add-on works beautifully; with more time, we extend west toward Kashgar and Xinjiang.
It's adapted for the Silk Road theme: you'll learn about Dunhuang's mural styles, then paint a simulated mural panel using traditional techniques and mineral colours - a unique souvenir of the caves. It's popular with travellers continuing on Silk Road itineraries.
