Day 1 - Arrival in Beijing
Transfer and hotel check-in. A gentle evening walk through Qianmen or Wangfujing, with your first Peking duck dinner. No museums today - just settle in.
Day 2 - The Forbidden City, with a specialist
A 2–3 hour guided morning at the Palace Museum, with an art historian or imperial-history guide choosing the halls and treasures that matter most, including the Treasure Gallery. After lunch, climb Jingshan Park for the rooftop panorama, then spend the late afternoon strolling the Shichahai hutongs at your own pace.
Day 3 - National Museum of China + a free afternoon
A guided morning at the National Museum of China - one of the largest museums on Earth - structured so you see the highlights without being overwhelmed. The afternoon is entirely yours: revisit a favourite gallery, rest at a teahouse, or wander Nanluoguxiang.
Day 4 - Beijing to Shanghai. A morning high-speed rail to Shanghai (~5 hours), with lunch and a book on board. Afternoon arrival and hotel check-in, then a relaxed walk along the Bund at sunset, with the Pudong skyline across the river.
Day 5 - Shanghai Museum + the old town
A 2–3 hour guided morning at the Shanghai Museum - world-famous for its bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy and Song paintings. Afternoon: the Yu Garden and City God Temple quarter, at a leisurely pace, with tea and a xiaolongbao lunch.
Day 6 - Shanghai to Changsha. Morning high-speed rail to Changsha (~5 hours). Afternoon arrival and a gentle stroll along the Xiang River or Orange Island, followed by Changsha's famous spicy street food in the old town.
Day 7 - Hunan Museum: Lady Dai
A guided morning at Hunan Museum, home of the Marquis of Dai's tomb - the Lady of Dai mummy, her astonishing silk robes and her perfectly preserved burial goods, among the greatest archaeological finds in Chinese history. Afternoon at leisure: Yuelu Academy on the hillside above the river, or rest.
Day 8 - Changsha to Chengdu
A day on the high-speed rail to Chengdu (~5–6 hours) - a travelling day for reading, discussion or watching the Chinese countryside pass by. Evening arrival and dinner of authentic Sichuan hotpot.
Day 9 - Sanxingdui & the Pandas
Morning at the Sanxingdui Museum - the colossal bronze masks, the sacred tree, the gold masks of a kingdom whose writing has never been decoded. Afternoon, a change of pace: the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Base, where the afternoon is quieter and the pandas are still active.
Day 10 - Jinsha Site + Chengdu to Baoji
A guided morning at the Jinsha Site Museum, built on an excavated sacrificial ground and home of the famous Sun and Immortal Bird gold foil. After lunch, board the high-speed rail west from Chengdu (~2.5–3 hours) through the Qinling Mountains, arriving in Baoji in the early evening. Overnight in Baoji - no need to backtrack.
Day 11 - Baoji: The Bronze Cradle of China, then Xi'an
A relaxed morning at the Baoji Bronzeware Museum - the largest bronze museum in China - where an expert guide leads you through the greatest Shang and Zhou ritual bronzes ever found, above all the He Zun, the Western Zhou wine vessel whose 3,000-year inscription is the earliest written occurrence of "Zhong Guo" (China). After lunch, a short high-speed rail hop east to Xi'an (~1 hour), check in, and dinner in the Muslim Quarter.
Day 12 - The Terracotta Army. A full but relaxed day at the Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum, with an archaeologist guide: the three pits of warriors, the Bronze Chariots hall, and an optional clay warrior-making workshop. Evening: the Grand Tang Mall lights.
Day 13 - Shaanxi History Museum & Departure
A guided morning at the Shaanxi History Museum, with its world-famous Hejiacun gold and silver hoard and exquisite Tang murals. Then transfer to Xi'an Xianyang International Airport for your onward flight.
