Sanxingdui is one of the most mysterious archaeological discoveries in China, representing the brilliant and unique ancient Shu civilisation that flourished in Sichuan more than 3,000 years ago. This Mini Sanxingdui Bronze Mask Making Workshop brings the wonder of ancient Shu relics to life for international student and adult groups. The workshop starts with a bilingual presentation introducing Sanxingdui’s strange bronze masks, giant bronze statues, golden masks and sacrificial culture. The guide explains the mysterious features of the bronze masks with protruding eyes and large ears, and shares the archaeological stories behind the excavation of the Sanxingdui site.
After the cultural introduction, the hands-on creation session begins. Each participant receives clay and sculpting tools to shape their own miniature Sanxingdui bronze mask. Students will carve the iconic big eyes, high forehead and large ears of the ancient Shu mask, then paint the surface to imitate the texture of aged bronze. The craft master provides one-on-one guidance to help students shape the details. When finished, visitors can take their handmade mask home as a special souvenir, a tangible reminder of the mysterious ancient Shu kingdom.
