This Giant Panda Base Science Education & Panda Keeper Volunteer Experience turns a simple sightseeing visit into a deep wildlife conservation learning journey for international student and adult groups. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the world’s most famous research and breeding centre for giant pandas, dedicated to panda rescue, breeding, scientific research and environmental education. The programme starts with a professional bilingual science lecture, delivered by the base’s science educator. Participants will learn the evolutionary history, biological characteristics, eating habits, breeding challenges and wild reintroduction projects of giant pandas. Students also explore the panda museum, view specimen displays, watch documentary videos and understand the long-term global efforts to protect this vulnerable species.
After the theoretical science session, the hands-on volunteer keeper experience begins. Participants change into special volunteer uniforms and protective gloves. Under the strict supervision of professional panda keepers, the group will complete authentic daily conservation tasks: selecting fresh bamboo, preparing nutritious panda cakes, cleaning the outdoor activity areas, and observing the behavioural patterns of giant pandas at close range. Students will learn how keepers design environmental enrichment activities to keep pandas healthy and active. This is not direct animal contact; all activities follow the base’s strict animal welfare rules to protect both pandas and visitors. At the end of the volunteer session, every participant receives an official volunteer certificate as a special souvenir of their conservation work.
