City: Luoyang
Luoyang is globally famous as the City of Peonies, with a peony planting history stretching back more than 1,500 years to the Tang Dynasty, when peonies became the favourite flower of the imperial court. This seasonal study programme combines botanical observation and traditional ceramic art, ideal for spring study tours between April and May.
The group visits the National Peony Garden, where thousands of peony varieties bloom in full colour. Our bilingual botany guide introduces peony species, cultivation techniques and the flower’s symbolic meaning of wealth and prosperity in Chinese culture. Students observe flower structures, record different colour varieties and try simple artificial pollination experiments. Next, we move to a ceramic studio for a peony porcelain painting workshop: participants paint colourful peony blossoms on white porcelain plates and vases, which will be fired and mailed home as unique floral art souvenirs.
