Sichuan Opera is one of China's most distinctive regional operas, famous worldwide for its stunning face-changing Bian Lian and fire-spitting skills, which are precious intangible cultural heritage of Sichuan province. This immersive workshop begins with a live Sichuan Opera performance by professional local artists. Overseas visitors can watch the magical face-changing act, where performers instantly switch colourful masks on stage, alongside fire-spitting and comedic folk scenes. Our bilingual instructor explains the character symbolism, mask colours and the history of Sichuan Opera in simple English, helping international students understand the stories behind the performance.
After the show, the hands-on workshop starts. Participants can try on gorgeous traditional Sichuan Opera costumes and colourful head ornaments, and paint simplified opera facial masks by themselves. The opera master will teach basic stage gestures, body movements and simple performance poses. Students can then work in small teams to rehearse and perform short mini scenes on the stage. This interactive experience turns the audience into performers, letting visitors feel the charm of Sichuan opera beyond simply watching a show.
