Food Culture & Cooking Experience

Taste China the way it's actually made. Our Food Culture & Cooking Experience workshops take you from the market stall to the steaming table - bargaining for fresh ingredients with local vendors, rolling dumpling skins with a family cook, stretching noodles the Lanzhou way, pouring a proper gongfu tea, or carving sugar into art. Every session is hands-on, beginner-friendly and delicious: you cook it, you eat it, and you take the recipes home. Sessions can stand alone or weave into your sightseeing days, and we'll match each experience to your route - from a market morning in Beijing or Xi'an to tea-picking hills in Guizhou or the Jiangnan region. Tell us what you love to eat, and we'll build your culinary journey around it.

Food Culture & Cooking Experience FAQs

Q1. I'm not a good cook - can I still join?
+

Absolutely. The classes are designed for all skill levels, including first-timers and children. Every step is demonstrated by an experienced instructor, and you'll be surprised how quickly even a complete beginner produces a perfect dumpling or a bowl of hand-pulled noodles. All ingredients and equipment are provided.

Q2. How long does a cooking experience take?
+

Most classes last 1.5–2 hours, from prep to eating what you've made. A market tour plus cooking session makes a lovely half-day (around 3–4 hours), and tea ceremonies run 1–1.5 hours. We'll build the day around the rest of your itinerary.

Q3. Do you cater for vegetarians, allergies or halal diets?
+

Yes - just tell us your dietary needs when booking. We adapt recipes and ingredients accordingly, and market tours can be tailored to what you can and can't eat. Many of our guests are vegetarian, vegan, halal or gluten-conscious, and every class is arranged around your requirements.

Q4. Can these experiences be added to my existing China tour?
+

Easily. Dumpling classes and market tours fit into any major city - Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guilin and beyond. Hand-pulled noodle making pairs perfectly with a Lanzhou or Silk Road route; tea-picking and tea-making suit Guizhou and the Jiangnan region; and seasonal sessions like mooncake making are timed around Mid-Autumn Festival. Share your route and we'll slot in the tastiest fit.

Q5. Do we get to eat what we make, and take anything home?
+

You eat everything you make - that's the reward. You also take home printed recipe cards (with exact ingredients and steps) plus plenty of photos and, of course, the skills themselves. For rice cake making and sugar painting, your creations are yours to keep and enjoy.
